How to Care for a Blazer or Jacket So It Lasts Longer

A beautiful jacket is an essential part of any wardrobe. Whether made from wool, linen, velvet, cotton or cashmere, proper care helps preserve its shape, colour and the quality of its fabric over time.

At La Jaquette, our jackets and blazers are crafted in limited editions in our Parisian atelier from carefully selected fabrics. Taking care of your jacket is also a way of extending the life of a piece designed to last.

Store your jacket properly after each wear

Proper storage plays an important role in preserving the shape of a blazer.

After wearing it, avoid folding your jacket or leaving it draped over a chair. Hang it on a wide enough hanger, ideally wooden, to help maintain the shape of the shoulders and prevent unnecessary creasing.

It is also a good idea to let your jacket air for a few hours before putting it back in your wardrobe, especially after a long day.

To protect it from dust and light, you can use a breathable garment bag. Avoid airtight plastic covers for long-term storage, as the fabric needs to breathe.

Lavender sachets or cedar wood can also be placed in your wardrobe to naturally scent your clothes and help protect fabrics such as wool and cashmere.

Avoid cleaning your blazer too often

A jacket generally does not need to be cleaned after every wear.

Cleaning it too frequently can weaken the fibres and gradually affect the fabric. Between cleans, simply allow your jacket to air and, if necessary, use a soft clothes brush to remove dust and small particles.

For minor stains, avoid rubbing vigorously or applying a stain remover directly before checking the care instructions for the fabric.

Choose dry cleaning when recommended on the care label

Blazers often contain several different components — outer fabric, lining, shoulder pads, interfacing and finishing details — which can make machine washing unsuitable.

For La Jaquette jackets labelled dry clean only, we recommend entrusting the garment to a professional cleaner.

Always check the care label on your garment, as recommendations may vary depending on whether it is made from wool, cashmere, silk, linen, cotton or velvet.

How to remove creases from a jacket without damaging it

For light creases, simply hanging the jacket for a few hours may already be enough.

Steam can also be used carefully. A garment steamer can help relax the fibres without applying direct pressure to the fabric.

If using an iron, take particular care: some materials may become shiny or damaged when exposed to excessive heat. Always use a suitable temperature and, if necessary, place a protective cloth between the iron and the jacket.

Repair rather than replace

A missing button, a slightly loose seam or a damaged lining does not necessarily mean that your jacket needs to be replaced.

A professional alteration or repair can often extend its life by several years.

If you have lost a button from a La Jaquette jacket, please do not hesitate to contact us. Whenever possible, we will help you find a suitable solution.

Caring for your clothes and repairing them when needed is part of a more lasting approach to your wardrobe.

How to protect a wool jacket from moths

Natural fibres such as wool and cashmere require particular care during periods when they are not being worn.

Before storing your jacket for a longer period, make sure it is clean and completely dry. Keep it in a breathable garment bag and consider adding cedar or lavender to your wardrobe.

Seasonal wardrobe changes are also a good opportunity to air your wardrobe and regularly check your clothes.

A jacket designed to last

A beautiful jacket should not be something you wear only a few times before replacing it.

At La Jaquette, we favour timeless cuts, exceptional fabrics and Parisian craftsmanship in limited editions. With the right care, a jacket can accompany you season after season and evolve with your wardrobe.

Taking just a few minutes to hang it properly, let it air and have it repaired when necessary can significantly extend its lifespan.
